Governor Daniels Announces CertainTeed

to add 145 job in Terre Haute

Terre Haute, Indiana (April 6, 2006)— The Terre Haute area economy received another boost today with an announcement by Governor Mitch Daniels that CertainTeed Corporation, a leading North American building products manufacturer, will locate its newest manufacturing facility there, bringing more than 100 jobs.

This is the second time in less than a month that the governor has been to Terre Haute for a jobs announcement, and the sixth investment in the region announced since the formation of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation in early 2005.

“Aisin, ThyssenKrupp, Pfizer, and now, CertainTeed. It's clear that west central Indiana has economic growth momentum, and we expect many more such announcements in the future. Terre Haute Mayor Burke and Vigo County officials are working hard to attract investments like this one,” said Daniels.

The company has committed to build a 300,000 sq. ft. facility on a 115-acre parcel in the Vigo County Industrial Park and will employ 115 people by the time the facility is completed in mid-2007. The company plans to add an additional 30 employees within the following year.

“The strong growth and market acceptance of our fiber cement product line necessitated the need for a new plant, strategically located in the Central United States ,” says Peter Dachowski, President and CEO of CertainTeed Corporation. “ Terre Haute is the perfect location because it allows us to service our Central U.S. customers more effectively while tapping into Indiana 's highly skilled workforce.”

The state of Indiana, through the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) and the Terre Haute Economic Development Corporation, worked together to provide an incentive package that helped lure the new investment to Indiana. The IEDC-offered incentives include up to $160,000 in training grants, $287,500 in infrastructure assistance to the local community, and up to $2.25 million in tax credits based on anticipated employment and capital investment levels.

Vigo County 's incentive offer consists of local property tax abatement and tax increment financing assistance of approximately $5.5 million as well as project site and infrastructure funding assistance of approximately $2.1 million.

When completed, the plant will manufacture CertainTeed's highly popular Weatherboards™ line of fiber cement siding. Available in traditional lap siding profiles, vertical profiles and decorative shapes, WeatherBoards features the uncanny appearance of wood cladding, carries a Class 1 (A) fire rating and is not susceptible to rot or insect infestation.

Since the creation of the IEDC in February 2005, the state has worked with local economic developers to attract significant company investment that will result in more than 800 new jobs for west-central Indiana.

  • ThyssenKrupp Presta , a manufacturer of automotive steering columns and subsidiary of German conglomerate ThyssenKrupp, will invest $5.5 million and add 100 new jobs.
  • Aisin Brake & Chassis , a manufacturer of brake parts for automakers such as Toyota, Honda, GM and Mitsubishi, will invest $35 million and add approximately 125 new jobs to their current workforce of 400.
  • Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation is currently investing $90 million and adding more than 50 new jobs to its current workforce of 1,100.
  • Pfizer Inc. recently announced $174 million in investment and the creation of more than 450 new jobs to produce its new form of inhaled insulin.
  • Staples will invest approximately $16 million in its Terre Haute distribution center and add more than 80 new jobs.
